Growing up in a Christian family, going to church every Sunday was not a matter of negotiation it was a must. I was groomed with bible verses at church and out of church which even till this day I still refer to when I need a source of motivation. However I never felt I belonged at church or I never felt free to be myself, it was as if when I entered church I had to change and be a different Thato. I dreaded waking up and get ready for church but I had no choice. I believed that there is a supernatural power that is above us all and that is God but I still had so many questions regarding, questioning religion was the last thing to do.

I then moved out from home and went to different churches but not in any of them I found sense of belonging, that’s when I decided that maybe God is not at church but in all of us and how we choose to worship him is our personal choice. I then started to discover myself and my spiritual side of life, I removed the religion label from my being and decided to learn more about other religions. I wanted to know more about people without being divided by religion, I wanted to see beyond religion and I wanted to do all that from a neutral point of view.

As I learnt about all these I got to learn about my personal spiritual journey and got to understand that spiritual and religion are different things and I chose spiritual over religion. I wanted to connect with the person that I am, to connect with nature, to worship the God that is in me and to not be labelled. I still draw strength from the bible, I still affirm using gospel music and I still go to church once in a while because the message still is the same and that’s where I learnt most of the values that molded me to be the person I am today.

Christianity taught me humility, love and patience which are the values I still live up to till this very same day however I wanted to learn my own way when it comes to spirituality.

We live in a diverse world and it’s our differences that make us unique, we need to celebrate and embrace the differences in all of us regardless of the color of our skin, our beliefs and status.

I believe in God that I am!
